BAYFIELD MUD COMPANY CASE

Bayfield Mud Company sent its customer service representative, John Wells, to investigate its product sent to Wet-Land Drilling Inc. The problem was 50-pound bags of mud treating agents sent to Wet-Land recently was underweight by 5%. Wet-Land found that the average weight per bag was 47.51 pounds. Normally, net loads average should be 50 pounds per bag with an acceptable standard division of 1.2 pounds. This mistake of Bayfield Mud had the great impact on Wet-Land’s cost. Bayfield Mud Company needed to solve the problem otherwise Wet-Land might find a new supplier.

There are many out of control samples on the X bar chart during shift 2 (2.00 pm. to 10.00 pm.), and shift 3 (10.00 pm. to 6.00 am.). This might be because the new employees who did not have much experience in quality control were working at that time period. The reason Bayfield had to hire more inexperienced employees was due to increase in its productivity to meet the energy demand, which was higher. However, the increase in the productivity and the quality control did not go together. The quality control of Bayfield became poor although the company assigned temporarily experienced employees to oversee the production during the night shift. As a result, Bayfield failed to maintain the product quality to meet its customers’ expectation.

TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT, BAYFIELD SHOULD DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. Hire permanent professional supervisors: To improve and maintain the product quality, Bayfield needs to set a team who has expertise and experiences in quality control monitors and supervise the production. These supervisors will set a timetable to check the quality of product, collect data, and analyze whether something goes wrong. If they identify any problem, they will take responsibility to find the cause and prevent the problem expanding to other steps, and then find the proper solution.
2. Educating and training new employees: To increase the new employees’ knowledge, skills and understanding in their job, Bayfield should assign its Human Resource Department to educate the new employees about their jobs, and provide specific workshops for all employees.
3. Increasing working intension by motivating the employees: One of the effective motivation to employee is reward. The company should encourage its employees to keep on track by rewarding them.

With those recommendations, in addition to solve the lightweight bag problem that had occurred with Wet-Land, Bayfield Mud Company can increase its productive efficiency and reduce risks that may occur due to the poor quality control.
