How would you react if you became next to or close to a stray dog? Would you respond by running, yelling, or even kicking or hitting the animal? Would you respond calmly, call animal control or even walk away? Just because the dog is mean doesn’t make it aggressive.
Aggression is such a broad term and it’s not all bad. The four types I am going to address are protective aggression, territorial aggression, fear-motivated aggression, and pain-induced aggression. Aggression that happens when a mother protects a family member whether it is human or another animal is called protective aggression. Did you also know the real reason Pits were brought over from England? It was to be “Nanny Dogs”. They are really good with kids. They are also NOT human aggressive. The most well-known bad way is dog fighting. Dogs aren’t bred to fight; they are trained to. That makes the two legged animal on hold the leash the offender.
If Pits are so bad then why were they our mascot for World War I and World War II? Sgt. Stubby was a war hero. He was a Pit Bull. He was wounded twice in action, saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack, and he single pawedly captured a German Spy. Did you know one of the most popular movies as we were kids had a Pit as a star? Pete the Pup from the movie The Little Rascals was a Pit Bull. That movie shows that they are good with all kinds of kids of all ages, races, and gender.
Responsible owners have responsible dogs. Pit Bulls actually score an 83.4 percent passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society (Animalz R Us 1). That is higher than the popular Border Collie who scores a 79.6 percent (1). The three dogs most likely to attack by nature are the Dachshund, Chihuahua and the Jack Russell Terrier. The most aggressive dog is the Dachshund. The Dachshund is also known as the wiener dog. Dan from Dog Reflections did a study that shows one in five Dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs. They also found that one in twelve have snapped on their owners.
There are approximately 5,000,000 Pit Bulls with sixty reported attacks and an attack to population ratio of 0.0012 percent (MABBR 1). There are approximately 240,000 Chow Chows with twelve reported attacks and an attack to population ratio of 0.005 percent (1).
