A pediatric oncologist is a doctor that works to treat children that have been diagnosed with cancer. Pediatric oncologist usually continued their training in pediatrics to be able to work in oncology. Pediatric oncology is different from adult oncologists because children’s cancers are completely different from the cancers that affect adults because cancer in children requires a different from of care and treatment. Also, a pediatric oncologist deals with fewer cancer cases and more hematologic disorders then adult oncologists (diseases in the blood and blood forming tissue). In pediatric residency you practice under the supervision of physicians. Pediatric oncologists will also be able to work in oncology during residency. During residency you learn from trained and certified physicians and gain and practice having professional relationships with patients. When finished with residency you then have 3 more years in a pediatric oncology fellowship. You must complete these 3 years to be board-certified and are able to take the board after the completion. A board certification is to ensure that the doctor has completed their education, and are experienced to provide high quality care to the patient, given by the boards of pediatrics and internal medicine. In order to become a pediatric oncologist you have to pass a second set of board examinations. When completing that all you are certified and able to practice oncology.

Pediatric oncologists starting salary out of residency is around $135,000. When you start to gain experience the salary starts to increase. Pediatric oncologists receive good benefits. They receive health insurance, vision and dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, paid days off, paid vacation, bonuses, pensions, and flexible spending. Not all these benefits are given to oncologist. It depends on the hospital and the state/country. Pediatric oncology is needed in a lot of hospitals around the country. They are mostly needed in children hospitals. But you can also find a pediatric oncology job in research hospitals around the country. I would love to work in a children’s hospital. I would prefer to work in California at the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.

To be a pediatric oncologist you not only have to be good with medicine and determining a treatment you have to have other skills as well. You are also going to need to have good communication. Communication is a necessity for this job, because you are going to have to give complex, and sad information. Having good communication skills will make you look more professional and will make this process easier for you and the patient.
