Life has a way of testing our fortitude. The challenges that I have experienced have deprived my life of normalcy. I am the product of an Italian-American home, the daughter of a supportive family, and a self-proclaimed former “resident” of Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. I was forced to mature quickly as I watched ambulances race my father to the hospital countless times for extended stays. Rather than fearing the anguish around me, I was intrigued by the health care environment. The doctors, nurses, and therapists who cared for my father made it easy for me to stay positive, even when I knew that he might not be returning home. After months of sulking, I realized that I was waiting for happiness to come to me rather than seeking it myself. I proactively decided to research other academic and career goals and discovered speech-language pathology, a field that combines my passions in seemingly unrealistic harmony. Becoming a speech-language pathologist has allowed me to study English, linguistics, literacy, speech, language, health care, and cognition, among many other stimulating topics. I believe that my dad is responsible for guiding me to pursue this ideal field of study that I have truly fallen in love with.
My dedication and passion for speech-language pathology are reflected in my transcript, volunteer activities, and work experiences. I have immersed myself in the industry by observing speech-language pathologists in various settings and developing professional relationships. My relationship with Leslie Kobilis, MS, CCC-SLP at Saint Peter’s University Hospital is especially important to me because she treated my dad for dysphagia. She is an outstanding mentor who understands my genuine desire to become a successful speech-language pathologist.
My background in education has led me to become a substitute teacher for the Spotswood Board of Education and Galloway Township Public Schools. I have taught children in grades K-12 and am frequently requested to substitute for special education teachers in resource classrooms. I spend as much time working with students as possible, even outside of the classroom. For the past eight years, I have dedicated myself to stage-managing the annual musical at Appleby Elementary School in Spotswood, New Jersey. Volunteering in the performing arts has familiarized me with dramatic techniques that I can implement into therapy as a clinician.
I recently completed an independent study regarding the use of holistic relaxation interventions for students with special needs. My research was conducted on a population of students at Appleby Elementary School between May and June of 2013. I concluded that interventions such as yoga and mediation could be some of the most effective ways for students with emotional and behavioral disorders to cope with stress. Students in such programs would be enabled to self-regulate their emotions and achieve their academic and personal goals. These interventions may also be helpful for students receiving special services in schools, including speech therapy, which makes my research applicable to my field.
