Harassment in the workplace

In the business world of today, sexual harassment against women in the workplace is becoming a controversial topic. Some scholars believe that it is a serious problem while others disagree and believe the issue has been blown out of proportion. In the following paper, I will be comparing and contrasting two articles: "Sexual harassment in the workplace" by Rose-Robin Pedone, and "America's sexual harassment law is overprotective" by Joan Kennedy Taylor. Pedone and Taylor express different views on the topic of sexual harassment against women in the workplace.

Pedone's perspective is that sexual harassment against women does exist in the workplace, and that it should be prevented as much as possible by employers since they are vicariously liable once they are aware it is happening. She discusses the costs of the lawsuits that have been settled and offers advice to employers on how to avoid problems related to this area (Pedone). This article is aimed towards business people, managers, supervisors, employees, lawyers and judges. It was written to educate people, advise them on how to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, and to give tips to managers on how to avoid a lawsuit due to discrimination or harassment of their employees. In my opinion, the article effectively conveys the message as well as the advice to this group of professionals. Her method of communication is appropriate for her target audience as well; the people she is intending it for will read it in the Business Journal.

The other author, Taylor, is writing from a management perspective and feels that the sexual harassment laws in America are not fulfilling their purpose. I find that her article is written from a slightly feminist perspective. She believes the laws are overprotective of women, and that this leads to different treatment of the sexes, which in turn causes hostility between males and females in the workplace (Taylor). Taylor's article is directed towards managers, the government, and all people of the business world.
