Hole In My Life Essay

Hole In My Life is a two-hundred page autobiography by Jack Gantos published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Hole In My Life is a story about a time \when some of Jack's choices changed his life and life got him sent to prison.
Jack was born in Pennsylvania and went to Sunrise High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Jack was in his junior year in high school when his parents decided to move to San Juan Puerto Rico. Being that Jack's family did not have enough money to send Jack to a private school because he could not speak Spanish for public school, they decided to send him to work.
Jack worked with his dad as a contractor for a hotel. Jack was getting paid well and had an overall good lifestyle but decided that being a contractor wasn't what he wanted to do with his life. Jack had dreams of becoming a writer, and he was determined to fulfill them. Jack told his parents that he was moving back to the States to finish high school ...view middle of the document...

The business however was not doing so well aside from the fact that people needed crates to flee from the violence in St. Croix.
In 1972, twenty year old Jack made a decision that would change his life forever. Jack agreed to sail a ship full of hash to New York. He was promised ten-thousand dollars in cash by a man named Rik and Jack figured that would be enough for college.
Jack arrived to New York with his shipmate Hamilton and they started to sell the hash with Rik. They were staying at The Chelsea Hotel when they were caught selling the hash.
Everyone was sent to jail and Jack was sent to jail for sixty days to six years. While Jack was in prison he decided to try to apply to college in hopes of getting out of prison quicker. He did get accepted into the college and did in fact get out of jail partly because of this. Jack only had to serve one and a half years because he was a model inmate and was an X-Ray tech for the prison. Being an X-Ray tech Jack saw all of the violence in the jail and decided that he would never end up in prison again.
When Jack got out of prison, he got a job selling Christmas trees and he lived with a nice old lady and her son (who gave Jack the job of selling Christmas trees). He also did end up going to a small college with a writing program.
Jack would always write gruesome stories about prison but decided to take a break from the violent prison stories and started to write happier stories, children's stories. Although Jack had to struggle so much to get there, he finally achieved his ultimate dream of becoming a writer.
Being in jail gave Jack a whole new perspective on life that helped change him for the better. Jack may have made some bad decisions in his life, but I truly believe that Jack learned from his mistakes and came out of this ordeal as a better person.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read because it shows that you have the power to improve your if you so wish to, that you have no one but yourself to blame for your decisions, and that no matter what situations you go through in life, you can overcome them if you have the desire to. I can honestly say that Hole In My Life is definitely worth the read.
