How does Human activity impact the coral reefs?
For a long time, human overconsumption has depleted the earth’s resources and as a result, has led to the extinction of any important species in all eco systems. Coral Reefs are a major component to the ocean and its marine food chain. Just like many other ecosystems, the health of coral reefs in general is in a decline, for many reasons. Some reasons include but are not limited to: CO2 emissions, Overfishing, Explosive fishing, and Pollution. I have also witnessed many tourists literally tearing pieces or coral from their home to be kept/sold as souvenirs. Resort development is also threatening the health of Coral reefs, seeing as with many Resorts next to a beach, most resorts consider the ocean a place for waste disposal (sewage, garbage, etc.) From a local perspective, this represents a real problem. On one hand, the mass tourism industry provides locals with steady income to support their families and creating business opportunities. However, on the other hand, if the amount of tourists visiting any coral reefs and tourist activities in general, is not managed responsibly, and these boats and tourists damage the reefs, the locals risk losing their income, when the coral has eventually been all but wiped out. Obviously, any country that relies on tourism money, needs to protect its assets like the coral reefs. If they don’t protect these coral reefs, tourists will go elsewhere, and as a result the country will suffer financially. The Global perspective of mass tourists on coral reefs is very simple. There are only a certain number of coral reefs in all of our oceans located around the tropics, at one point in the future, with places like China or India growing, there will be a significant amount of pressure put into sustaining the coral reefs for this amount of tourists.

Another large factor to the decline in Coral reefs health is greenhouse gas emissions. Coral reefs are very fragile and require several conditions to live in. For example: Water temperature has to be around 23 to 25 degrees Celsius, Depth of less than 25 meters because of exposure to light for photosynthesis, Clean and well oxygenated water produced by waves/moving water (near beaches), etc. There is not one but 2 major reasons that coral is being damaged due to excess levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere....
