Identifying a Researchable Problem: Open Visitations in ICU
According to ASHA Evidence Based Practice is the combination of clinical expertise opinion, data, and patient’s perspectives, with the goal of providing high-quality services (2013). The process of evidence-based practice consists of formulating a research question, collecting evidence, including views, and then evaluating the entire process. This project introduces the research topic I’ve chosen, which identifies a researchable problem, and formulates an answerable question that is relevant to nursing and evidence-based practice.
Open Visitations in ICU Initiative
Today, most hospitals have strict ICU visiting hours despite ...view middle of the document...
According to Berwick and Kotagal, visits from family and friends did not increase patient’s stress levels. Furthermore, having family members present actually facilitated communication between patients and clinicians. Another discovery was that family members and friends tended to feel less anxiety when allowed to visit according to their desires.
Formulating Feasible Research Questions
Clearly defined, well-structured question need to be formulated to promote effective research initiative (Davies, 2011, p. 75). A research topic question must be specific and relevant and should have more than one answer. The process of creating multiple, generalized questions related to the research topic should assist one in finding a workable question. The following are generalized questions created for my research project that are related to the promotion of open visitation in ICU.
• Is there a decrease in patient anxiety and stress with the presence of family and friends at the bedside in ICU?
• Do patients display positive effects on cardiovascular measures when family and friends are present while in ICU?
• Is there an increase in patient satisfaction with open visitations in ICU?
• Do healthcare professionals have less time for patient care when open visitation in ICU is allowed?
• Is there a decrease in stress and anxiety experienced by the family members and friends with open visitations in ICU?
The generalized questions above all relate to my research topic of interest. With the main goal being patient satisfaction, wellbeing and promotion of fast healing while in ICU, I chose the following question, “Is there a decrease in patient anxiety and stress with the presence of family and friends at the bedside in ICU?” for my research paper.
PICO Variables Relevant to Chosen Research Question
“The concept of PICO was introduced in 1995 by Richardson et al. to break down clinical questions into searchable words” (Davies, 2011, p. 76). I incorporated the PICO concept in the analysis of my research question. In relation to my research question, the mnemonic PICO represents the...
