Managing Organizational Change Essay

In a company in which the organization is failing, it is imperative to bring in fresh, new management ideas and a clear vision of how to properly manage to turn the organization around. One of the biggest problems within our twenty first century is the technology that is available for all companies. It is hard to keep up with all the developments and upgrades daily. "If it weren't for change, a manager's job would be relatively easy. Planning would be simple because tomorrow would be no different from today." (p.356) With this in mind, managers must work cooperatively with their staff in order to address the problems at hand, bring ideas to the table, and then finalize a plan of action to address each area completely.The first step will be to create a vision for the company. Using surveys, or other means of collecting data, to focus the need and desire for change within the organization. Using that data, the manager will need to determine the needs for change in the structure of the organization, the technology within the organization, and the people or workforce in place. The new vision would be to "be number one among advertising companies." Once this goal is reached, a new goal will need to be put in place.These categories should all work together and realize that one can not function without the others. The things that would be affected during the structural portion of the overhaul would include "work specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, span of control, centralization, formalization, job redesign, or actual structural design." (p. 361) Some of the things that would be reviewed and revised would be the way that the department is set up and who answers to who. It would also entail what each person is responsible for by creating new job descriptions that focus on what each person is most qualified or the best at. The first thing that would need to be reviewed is everything that needs to occur and what functions within the organization need to happen regularly to create a list of job functions and requirements. Then, dividing up the workload among the workers to ensure that there is equitable distribution of workloads.Some of the steps that would need to occur in order for changes to effectively transition from the old to the new would be to address people issues. Keeping in mind that a new manager would be in changes, jobs will be revised, and new skills may be developed, people may be skeptical and uncertain. These should not be addressed individually, but rather as a proactive approach by addressing the uncertainty upfront with the whole group. This type of thinking requires data collection and planning to be successful. This step should be realistic and should be addressed in a timely manner so that the following steps can occur without much delay.Secondly, managers need to be certain of themselves, as workers will usually look to them for support and direction regarding their new roles.
