The issue on the legalization of Marijuana is highly controversial in the United States. This illicit drug is derived from the dried leaves, seed and flower of Cannabis plants, which are found to have addictive properties. It is highly accessible because of the growing transaction of Marijuana in the street. The most common way to ingest Marijuana is through smoking and oral consumption. It can be used as an ingredient in food and it can also be brewed as tea. People consuming Marijuana overtime can develop a dependency towards the drug, creating a severe distraction in their personal lives. Despite its effects, THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the main psychoactive ingredients in marijuana, had been found to treat and ease various health problems. These include stimulating appetite for AIDS patients who suffer severe weight loss, and controlling nausea and vomiting suffered by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
The de-criminalization of Marijuana in United States will bring positive impact towards the society because it promotes the medical usage of marijuana and a healthy economic growth through the diminishing of government spending for a war against Marijuana
People all across the world have been using marijuana for medical purposes since ancient time. The first known record of cannabis usage was in 2727 B.C. during the reign of Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. Around 2000 B.C., the Egyptians were also found to have knowledge of cannabis usage as a medicine to treat sore eyes. Around a millennium later, Indian doctors were found to create anesthetic by mixing cannabis and milk. The Ancient Greek was also familiar with cannabis medical properties to cure earaches. However, marijuana is not only known for its healing powers, it has been used recreationally since America’s early days. In 1937, the Congress passed down the Marijuana Tax Act, which effectively banned the consumption of marijuana in United States. In 1996, scientist rediscovered the medical properties of marijuana in treating diseases like cancer, AIDS, chronic pain and others illnesses. According to Kayla Webley of Time Magazine, “In the past five years, the number of medical-marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles has exploded from four to nearly 600.”(Webley). The number of medical dispensaries had increase drastically over the years as an increasing number of people had been found to consume marijuana recreationally in Los Angeles area. Despite that, the government had shut down around 400 dispensaries in June in response to the increase usage of Marijuana for recreational users.
A palpable change can be seen in the percentage of Americans who believe that Marijuana should be legalized.
