Why should such a harmless herb be seen as a dangerous drug when it could save your life one day? After all, the cannabis plant has been in use for hundreds of years in America before and after its legalization in 1937. Marijuana dates back into the first colonies in the 17th century where the hemp was used from the plant. Hemp is bi product from the cannabis plant and was a major cash crop of the day. Hemp was used in many forms. Hemp was used to make clothes, fuel, paper and building materials. Centuries later, America produced hemp as a cash crop which was pushed by the government due to its generation of tax revenue. People are growing marijuana themselves more than ever. The drug laws have only reduced the amount of marijuana entering the country causing more marijuana fields to appear in our own backyards. Marijuana is now grown on a large scale inside of America’s borders due to the high stakes of transporting the substance across borders. If prohibition of marijuana were to end, the tax money generated from the growth of marijuana and production will surpass the amount of money the government spends currently fighting it. Bills have been passed allowing the government to spends billions of dollars airing anti marijuana ads on tv and billboards that only puts a small dent in stopping people from using the substance. Also the majority of prisoners currently behind bars are convicted of a marijuana charge. If only the plant became legal, thousands of weed smoking non violent prisoners would be free and the money used to fight the marijuana war could be used for many other things such as education or jobs for the newly freed prisoners.

Legalizing marijuana will do away with nearly all marijuana crimes. The groups that controlling the marijuana market today operate outside the law. Eliminating these marijuana laws would make the cannabis business legit and would also substitute the current drug runners with a honest job. When marijuana is finally legalized, the market itself will no longer be viewed as a criminal operation, but more of a business for small ownership and large scale. It seems like the government doesn’t realize that the prohibition laws actually raise illegal activity. Prohibition lead to others crimes as well. Alcohol was made illegal in the early 1900’s because alcohol was believed to have destroyed society.
