Walking into the auditorium of this brand new high school, my daughter and her friends were silent with amazement. “We get to play here?” I heard one whisper, “This is going to be awesome, “ said another. I gathered their coats and walked them onto the stage. Upon arrival, their orchestra teacher, Mrs. Gomez, greeted the children as she coordinated seating arrangements. She looked up at me and said, “Thank you so much for helping!” The girls sat and promptly opened violin cases and set up sheet music. Other parents continued dropping off children before taking seats throughout the concert hall. I assisted the children to a large room backstage to store coats and instrument cases. Once belongings were secure, we walked down the hall to an open lounge area where pizza and dessert awaited the hungry musicians. Each seemed pleased with the food options, by commenting on the aroma upon entering the room. One boy expressed that playing violin “really works up an appetite.” I agreed, saying, “ I bet it does!” I quickly began helping other volunteers serve the students pizza slices. But of course, I couldn’t call myself a nursing student if didn’t stress the importance of washing hands either in the bathroom or with my conveniently packed sanitizer. As the students finished their second helping of pizza, I began offering the delicious brownies that Ms. Gomez baked for this special night. Once everyone was satisfied, we cleaned up and headed back to auditorium to take our places for the show. By now, the concert hall was overflowing with anxious parents, school staff as well as nervous musicians. The first of three conductors took center stage. After welcoming the audience, she introduced the elementary group of orchestra players. The time had finally arrived, the lights lowered and silence followed. With the flick of her stick, the music started right on cue. The songs were each played with ease, as if they had played together for months. A parent beside me asked in astonishment, “ Is this the same group that we just heard an hour ago? This sounds amazing!” I’ve been proud of my daughter many times, but watching her as she followed every note with such confidence and poise, pride couldn’t even describe my emotions. As the final note was played, the crowd roared with applause. Backstage was buzzing with excitement as parents and fellow students congratulated each other. They were so proud of themselves and knew their hard work had definitely paid off. As we walked home, I listened to my daughter’s reaction of the night and couldn’t help think of those unfortunate families fail to benefit from a school music program.
