Organizational trends PAGE 1
Organizational TrendsIn today's competitive business world organizations have realized the importance of their employees as their most important resource. This idea leads to the importance of the study of organizational behavior. In order to understand organizational behavior precisely, we must first understand trends in organizational behavior and how these trends have an impact on employees. Organizational behavior trends may include globalization, diverse workforce, organizational culture, work-related stress, technology, influence of ethics on decision making, team work, politics and power, conflict management and motivation. Trends in organizational behavior have a huge impact on organizations and their employees."Stress is tension from extraordinary demands, constraints, or opportunities in the organization".(Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005).There are numerous reasons for work related stress such as work overload, personality conflict, fear of losing one's job, high or vague expectations of the organization, office politics, formal and informal hierarchies and technology. "Technology is the technical means people use to improve their surroundings, using knowledge, tools, and systems to make their lives easier and better". Technology provides people with a range of options to stay organized and be more efficient and productive. It has the potential to provide employees with the tools they need to do a better job.In today's business market, technology is constantly advancing and evolving. The various demands imposed upon individuals within an organization are related to keeping technological knowledge current, developing the skills necessary to apply technology in the work environment, and provide support that insures the proper functionality of technology. Technology provides organizations and employees with the support and tools for making decisions easier and in some cases less stressful. Even though technology has simplified many aspects of business, its rapid and constant change gives rise to much work-related stress. The introduction of new technology creates anxiety for workers forced to sustain technological knowledge. Many workers lack the ability to adapt quickly and efficiently to rapid changes, feel unable to handle the information properly and feel pressured with too many demands. These issues, in turn, affect the overall level of stress in an employees' personal life. Maintaining the balance between ever-increasing demands at work and the need for a well-rounded life outside of the office provides additional stress and affects quality time with their families. Employees attempt to balance work and personal lives but technology intrudes on their personal time through email, voicemail, cell phones, and laptop computers. On the other hand stress in the workplace costs employers millions of pounds every day and poses a serious health hazard for workers in all types of jobs. The Webster's...
