Should Prostitution Be Legalized? Essay

952 words - 4 pages

It has been argued whether prostitution should be legalized or not. There are negative and positive sides to the debate, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. Some countries have already legalized prostitution, and it has benefited them in many ways. The benefits of legalization include health care for the women, which in turn lowers the incidence of HIV and STDs. Criminalizing prostitution, it could be argued, goes against the Declaration of Independence.(clarify this) The government could protect and regulate taxes and retirement if prostitution was legalized. About 38% of Americans feel that it should be legalized, 48% no, and the other 13% unsure.
Although some think that prostitution being legalized would cause many health problems, there are many ways the health aspect could be improved. It could protect employees, customers, and citizens. You may ask how a citizen would benefit, but if you look at is as if a husband cheating on his wife with a so called prostitute that had contracted aids without knowing, and went back and slept with his wife without knowing he could possibly give a disease to his wife, but prostitution being legalized would reduce this happening because a prostitute contracting HIV wouldn’t be allowed to work. If prostitution was legalized there could be a law where every employee got a checkup every month. This would reduce the spread of STD’s. If a person were to contract a STD they would have to go through proper procedure to help cure it, and during this time would not be allowed to work. If they contracted a STD that is yet un-curable they would not be allowed to work and if they continued to do so could end up in jail considering the fact that they know. It would not only make it safer but lessen the spread of STD’s.
Free Choice: Prostitution is an act that can’t be stopped; why not make it legal to where it could be modified and maintained. Women should have the right to do as they please with their own body. Why is it not allowed to sell something that is known as “free?” Of course, the most important argument for the legalization of prostitution services is that such laws violate one's most basic and rights. Individuals own their own bodies and their own labor services and have the right to decide how those labor services should be used. As long as the prostitution is voluntary, there is no reason for governmental interference; such interference constitutes a violation of the privacy and liberty of the individual. However, the government does have a legitimate role to play in the prostitution market. As with all markets, it should ensure that all exchanges are truly voluntary. In short, it should protect individual rights to property, especially the right not to be forced. The government could also play a role by having taxation on the occupation. Prostitutes should pay regular taxes on...
