Pepto-bismol was developed in the early 1900s in New York during a period when there were very poor sanitary conditions. As a result of the lack of hygiene came an illness which was common in children known as “cholera infantum.” The disease caused an outbreak of severe diarrhea, vomiting and occasionally death. As a result a doctor put together a formula which was made from pepsin, zinc salts, salol, and oil of wintergreen along with coloring which gave it a pink color. The formula fought against the prodromes and was known as ‘Bismosal: Mixture Cholera Infantum.’ As times progressed and hygiene did as well, cholera infantum became less and less significant. Even though they are orally administered into the body one has the option of simply drinking or chewing it as well. Pepto-bismol also comes in cherry flavor just to allow it to be more easily taken by people who may not be not be able to take the medicine otherwise. Once administered into the body it is assumed the pepto-bismol provides coating for the stomach and intestines which protects them from stomach acid by decreasing inflammation in the stomach and eradicating the bacteria at fault. Pepto-bismol works like no other.

As every drug has its side effects so does pepto-bismol. Side effects which may be caused as a result of taking pepto-bismol include: anxiety, dark tongue, dark stools, muscle spasms or weakness or constipation. The positive thing about this drug though is that only 1% of people who have taken this medication have ever complained about any of the listed side effects. It is safe to say that pepto-bismol is one of the safest drugs on the market. Some alternatives to the drug are Walgreens Anti-diarrheal caplets, Imodium Advanced multi-symptom relief anti-diarrheal/anti-gas caplets, Emetrol for nausea. Although there may be surrogate drugs for pepto-bismol. None of them can do the job like pepto. Most of the alternatives serve only one purpose and cost more than pepto-bismol which relieves the patient of five different symptoms. This is why pepto is still the top choice for many.

To ensure that pepto did indeed relieve patients of their illness, an experiment was performed using placebo and bismuth subsalicylate. The experiment performed is given below.

“Bismuth subsalicylate (BSS) and placebo were evaluated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study as adjunct to rehydration therapy in 123 children, aged 4 to 28 months, hospitalized with acute diarrhea. The dosing regimen was 20 mg/kg five times daily for 5 days. Significant benefits were noted in the BSS group compared with placebo as manifested by decreases in stool frequency and stool weights and an improvement in stool consistency, significant improvement in clinical well-being, and shortening of the disease duration.
