Prostitution, which is the act of engaging in sexual intercourse for money, has been part of human society since Biblical times. It had become a common part of our society because the women that choose to take part in prostitution are often on the brink of bankruptcy or already are and need a way to provide for themselves and/or their families. They have few to no laws in place to protect them. This leads to the question of whether prostitution should be legalized or whether it should be kept as a common, but illegal occurrence. There are many reasons it is better for prostitution to be legalized.
Prostitution has been not just recognized, but referenced for hundreds of years. It has even been referred to in the Bible not just once, but many times. In Leviticus 19:29 the verse states, “Do not degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will turn to prostitution and turn to wickedness.” This was acting as a message to parents to keep their daughters virgins until they are married off. This was just one of the earlier instances it was mentioned, it was also mentioned by Jesus in the Parable of the Two Sons, “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the Kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even after you saw this you did repent and believe him.” (Matt 21: 31-32). In today’s society, there are very few people who haven’t heard of prostitution or known the gist of what it meant. It has, unfortunately become a common practice in our society and around the world. This has led many people to form an opinion on prostitution as a whole and not just its legalization. As stated above, there are a few different reasons it would be in our nations’ best interest to legalize prostitution.
One of the reasons that prostitution should be legalized is that, even though the methods are completely unorthodox, it does provide an income for women who choose to partake in it. According to debate.org, “…prostitution produces over $100 billion in revenue annually.” Now this is on a worldwide scale but that doesn’t take away from the fact that these women were providing a service and being compensated for it, even if they were providing sex. It could be that women taking part in this ‘job’ truly believe they have hit rock bottom and that there really is no other way for them to be able to provide for themselves or families because they can’t or don’t have anyone to help or that is willing to help. These women will continue in this profession because this provides well enough for them to live off of and use this as their only means of income without trying to get off the streets or back on track. Now, there are always extenuating circumstances where, even if they truly wanted to be away from prostitution, they may be unable to get away.
Another benefit to legalizing prostitution would be that it...
