The debate on whether or not to legalize medical marijuana has been going on for quite some time. Medical marijuana is used for many health problems, such as pain, but has a lot of controversy behind it. I, personally, am all for legalizing medical marijuana.
Marijuana has been used for medical purposes as early as 2737 B.C. when Emperor Shen Neng of China prescribed marijuana tea for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, malaria and poor memory. The medical use of marijuana would then spread throughout Asia, The Middle East, and the eastern part of Africa. The pain that AIDS patients go through during wasting syndrome can be helped with the use of medical marijuana. The wasting syndrome in AIDS patients is when he or she loses at least 10% of their body weight, including muscle. Nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are all affiliated with wasting, and can be treated by the use of marijuana. The patients must not treat it by smoking marijuana because it will greatly affect the immune system in a negative way. Fungal and bacterial pneumonia in AIDS patients who smoked marijuana suggests that this can either suppress the immune system or expose patients to an added burden of pathogens.
There are many people who suffer with chronic pain and it has been proven that marijuana can help. It’s been tested to show that marijuana reduces chronic ongoing neuropathic pain as well as acute pain. A study that was conducted on 25 patients showed that it can relieve more than 30% of the pain that they were dealing with at the time. Not all types of pain can be treated with marijuana use, in fact, it can increase the sensitivity of the pain in the patients. The effects of marijuana on people need to be evaluated more to know when a patient is able to use it for a certain pain.
In the case of patients suffering from depression, it was studied that marijuana decreased suicidal tendencies. Results have shown a 5% decrease in the total suicide rate, an 11% decrease in the suicide rate of 20-29-year-olds, and a 9% decrease in the suicide rate of 30-39 year-olds. In some cases, for some people, marijuana can worsen depression. Low motivation, fatigue, and withdrawal from activities are central features of depression and marijuana can worsen each one of those problems.
