Everybody has their own unique sleep requirement. Our sleep need depends upon genetic and physiological factors and also varies by age, gender, and previous sleep amounts. The average adult should get about eight hours of sleep per night, and children even more. But why do we need sleep? New research has shown that one reason why we sleep is to “clean the brain”. During sleep, cerebral spinal fluid is pumped around the brain, and flushes out waste products. The process helps to remove the molecular debris that brain cells produce as part of their natural daily activity, along with toxic proteins that can lead to dementia.

I wasn’t as irritable, felt more relaxed, and less tired. I only took two naps throughout the duration of the sleep log, but I did see a change in results with them. I would wake up from the naps feeling refreshed and in a better mood. I never drink any caffeinated beverages so this variable would not have affected me.
The times I woke up in the morning were usually about the same throughout the week. However, on the weekends I would sleep much later. I found that even though I was getting more sleep, I would sometimes feel more tired waking up. Nevertheless, later in the day I would feel more awake, have more energy, and be less short-tempered. One other change is that I would go to bed later on the weekends than on a school night. I don’t think this had a significant impact because I would sleep later in the morning, creating some sort of balance.
Sleep also has a substantial impact on a person’s cognitive memory, concentration, and mood. For example, someone who gets more sleep would be more likely to remember something on a test for which they have studied. Their memory would feel sharper and faster compared to being sluggish or tired. Personally, I noticed that on the days where my quantity or quality of sleep was lower it would be harder to concentrate or focus in class or on a test or quiz. I would find myself spacing out more often throughout the day.
