For As Long As Humans Have Lived On This Planet,

1494 words - 6 pages

For as long as humans have lived on this planet, they always tried to better themselves. This often comes in the form of new technology and machines. Ever since cave men have lived, they tried to find and make new tools and weapons which would help them hunt, grow and basically survive in the harsh nature. As we step up in the evolutionary latter you can see that human inventions became more complex. Humans developed mathematics, science and most important the written language. In the Middle Ages technology allowed humans to build the greatest ships, of that time, which allowed for the exploration of out planet, and the discovery of the "New World", America. As you move along the time line, you see how this country, in particular, changed in the nineteenth century to a manufacturing nation. This was once again caused by further technological advances in the mechanical fields. Moving along the time line, when the computers were invented they made it possible for many things to be archived which were never thought of being possible, such as the moon and solar system exploration, just to name few. However, as we became more technologically advanced, we end up having more problems than before such technology was available. Technology, which is meant to be the cure or answer for all human problems, economical or social, does nothing but invent more problems which need solving. As humans get more technologically advanced, we end up hurting all of the humanity that is not on the same technological level. "All professions are conspiracies against common folk… physicians, lawyers, teachers, and scientists protect their status by creating vocabularies that are incomprehensible to the general public.(Postman 486). Not everyone can be at the top, having all of these wonderful careers because who would you have to do all of the dirty manual work. I don't want to say everyone, but generally a majority of humans at one time or another has received a letter from an insurance company, a bank or any other form of large scale organization which they were unable to understand due to the fact of the words that were used. "Technology tends to favor some groups of people and harm the others". (Postman 487). Technology always ends up solving the problems at hand, however it invents more problems in the long run. Take the printing press for example. "Guttenberg thought his invention would advance the course of the Holy Roman See, whereas in fact it turned out to bring revolution which destroyed the monopoly of the church." (Postman 488) The press allowed all sort of books to be printed in mass quantities. Not only was the bible being printed now for every one to have one of their own but so were the anti-religious books. You can dig more with a backhoe than with a shovel. Simple idea, you do more damage with a bigger thing. More books meant more anti-god ideas. Humans think that technology is so great that it will solve all of their problems....
