The lives of the American industrial worker between 1865 and 1900 were filled with both good and hard experiences. Mass waves of immigrants moving to America threatened job stability, labor unions formed with the goal of improving the lives of workers, and changes in technology made work less tedious and changed the lives of workers. Immigration, labor unions, and technology had significant effects upon the industrial worker.

Changes such as a national holiday, better wages, and less hours positively affected the industrial worker by improving their well being in and out of the job.
The net results of technological advances during the gilded age caused America to be seen as a heavily industrialized and increasingly urban world power. Frederick Winslow Taylor redesigned factory machines in the steel industry to make them faster, thus reducing the amount of movements needed to be exerted by workers and machines. This increased efficiency and also cut the need for skilled workers. Due to the growth of various machine shops throughout the country, engineering colleges surfaced to sufficiently give workers the skills needed to respond to the demand for expertise. As a result of the demand, the coal and railroad industry gave further opportunities for skilled individuals to contribute to the American working class, due to advances within those fields compared to previous decades.
